Paul and Lindsay

Tuesday August 17, 2010

I first met Lindsay in the second grade. Mrs Lindsey class. That was about 20 years ago. I never thought at that moment or even years later I would be standing there photographing her getting married. I was thrilled and honored to do so. My first memory of paul was in either Jr high or high school. So to shoot this wedding was a almost like a reunion of friends considering a lot of the guest were from my child hood.

Paul and Lindsay are a couple who truly love and respect each other. I shoot a ton of weddings and to be honest at the reception the bride and groom are just not together. Not Paul and Lindsay. They were together pretty much the whole time. They didn't do it for show or because they had to. They both had this glow about them that was radiant and eye catching. It was a remarkable sight.

Paul and Lindsay's wedding was so much fun and the wedding had so much energy. They had a band that to be honest was one of the best bands that I have ever heard play at the wedding. They had the crowed jumping singing and chanting the whole night.

Shooting this wedding and seeing some old friends at the wedding was an amazing feeling. I couldn't help but think that me and these guys and gals were in elementary, Jr high and high school together. To see Jeff, Liz, Kristin, KJ, Jay, Mike, Steve, Chris, and obviously Liz and Paul was awesome!

To Paul and Lindsay I look forward to seeing you years down the line and seeing the love you guys have now for each other even stronger. You guys are an amazing couple. I wish you years of happiness. If I had a glass I would raise it wait I have a pencil holder. This works! To Paul and Lindsay, May you marriage and your relationship continue to be amazing. May that Spark and fire you both feel for each other never flicker out and may your marriage be the example that no matter what marriage was meant to be till death do you part. To Paul and Lindsay

Its raining gum balls hallelujah !

Monday August 16, 2010

I get asked how do I do what I do?  In other words what is my work flow?  I’m going to let you in on my thought process for this past shoot where I mixed in an engagement shoot with gumballs.  Now some people out there are thinking that’s stupid.  Why would you do that?  My answer is because it’s awesome!

One of the first things you want to do when doing a shoot is to always seek inspiration.  My inspiration for this shot was the movie Bedtime Stories.  Yes folks I love this movie and I’m not afraid to admit it! In the movie if you remember it rains gumballs.  Well actually it was a candy truck that got in a car accident and the gumballs fell out of the back of the truck but either case gumballs came from the sky!

I took this Idea and put it into work in my brain. I thought about this shot for a good 2 months.  After pondering this I decided I needed 3 things Gumballs, a plastic kiddy pool and a fun couple.  And by the way I did say kiddy pool lol.  Derek and Laura stood in the kiddy pool as we dumped the gumballs over them.  It made for easy pick up.

The original thought was to have them use an umbrella and have the gumballs poured over them.  Which seems super easy right?  Well when you’re an idiot ( me ) and forget the ladder it makes life way more difficult.   Did I also mention Derek is 6 feet 6 inches tall?

So we tried the umbrella for a good 45 minutes and it just wasn’t coming out right.  So my friend Jill who I forgot to mention was dumping the gumballs on Derek and Laura was like lets ditch the umbrella.  WORKED LIKE A CHARM!!!!  I set my camera to 1.4 with an shutter speed of 800 and ISO 1000 and fired away.  But there was one problem the gumballs were not evenly distributed over the shot.  So TA DA Photoshop.  I added 35 gumballs to the picture to finish the job.  This all took about 1-½ hours.  But it was worth it.

Keep this in mind to get the shot doesn’t take one shot it takes many shots.  Photography is all about patience creativity and knowledge.  If you have these 3 things your golden!
